Our Story

Le Ciel is the passion project of Michelin-trained chef Shuchi Bhardwaj, who, at just 28, has already carved an incredible culinary path. After honing her skills in Paris, Milan, Barcelona, and London—where she worked for renowned chef Heston Blumenthal—Shuchi opened Le Ciel in Wellington in March, bringing a fresh, refined take on French-inspired pastries to the city.

Born in India and raised in Tanzania, Shuchi’s journey began when she moved to London to study engineering. However, a part-time job at a restaurant sparked her true passion for baking, leading her to drop out and pursue a culinary apprenticeship. She trained in Michelin-starred restaurants, learning from industry icons like Blumenthal, who inspired her to follow her dreams. In 2014, Shuchi moved to Paris to study at Le Cordon Bleu and soon found herself mastering French pastries like croissants, macarons, and baguettes while working in local bakeries. Her journey continued through Italy, Spain, and southern France, further expanding her skill set and passion for pastry.

Arriving in New Zealand in 2016, Shuchi completed an advanced patisserie degree at Le Cordon Bleu Wellington and worked at some of the country’s best-known restaurants, including The Grove, Island Gelato, and Foxglove Bar & Kitchen. As head chef at Café Neo, her desserts won the Wellington On a Plate best dine dish awards in both 2022 and 2023—an achievement unique to Shuchi.

After years of selling her creations at local markets, Shuchi, along with her parents, found the perfect spot on Tory Street to establish her dream bakery. Together, they sourced every appliance and piece of crockery from across New Zealand, creating the welcoming, stylish space that Le Ciel is today. Shuchi’s fine dining background influences everything here, but her goal is to make these indulgent flavours accessible and fun for everyone.

Living nearby with her parents and her beloved cat, Fluffy—a resilient rescue who has journeyed with her across continents—Shuchi works long hours at Le Ciel but has big dreams ahead. Shuchi’s vision continues to evolve, just like the unique flavours she brings to every pastry. At Le Ciel, every visit is a celebration of culinary artistry, resilience, and joy.
